GuildMestar Developer Insights - July 1, 2022

Hello GuildMestars,

With the current update well underway today I'd like to take the opportunity to touch on an interesting topic not specific to any one game or project, motivation.

When working on any project for an extended period of time you will notice your desire to preform certain tasks changes, and not necessarily for the better. A recent example I can provide is the last GuildMestar update.  This update focused heavily on a new way of bringing dungeon content to your brave adventurers and with it came a host of new events. Midway through the writing process for that new content you begin to question why you would front load so much of the same content in an update because, as you come to find out, boredom sets in.

You start finding little distractions like 'oh well I still need to do this' or 'I should change this too' just to mix things up. While this may seem productive at first, as now more things are being accomplished, you are actually only scope creeping yourself without tackling the remaining primary issues. This type of distraction is helpful as it allows you time to further reflect on the original project, however supplementing it with unplanned work is ultimately counterproductive.

In an attempt to harness this motivation re-invigoration I've changed how my updates will be planned. Purposefully including variety content with the same end goal in my update's original scope will provide ample opportunity to shift my focus should I feel repetition setting in. While this update has only been under-works a couple weeks now it has certainly been a breathe of fresh air, and not the cabbage water kind.
